The Deng ethnic group

Name: Deng, Darang, Geman, Kaman, Mishmi, Miju

Population: 1,400

Localization: They live mainly in the southeast part of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, and in India near districts.

 

The Deng are one of the smallest peoples inhabiting inside Chinese borders. Isolated in the southeast border of Tibet, are divided at least in two groups: Darang and Geman, that the experts say are related with the Mishmi-Miju peoples living in Arunachal Pradesh province in India.

Wildlife Hunting by Tribal Communities in Arunachal Pradesh, Northeast India: implications for wildlife conservation

The main focus of my survey was the Miju Mishmi community, the dominant tribe in these districts. These communities practice shifting cultivation. Rice, millet and maize are the main crops grown.

The Digaru Mishmi is a scheduled tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, under the greater fold of the Mishmi group. They are popularly known as Taraon. The community is concentrated in the Hayuliang, Changlagam and Goiliang circles of the Lohit district. They are engaged in jhum cultivation.They are adept at weaving, basketry and cloth embroidery and expert in making bamboo baskets and cane furniture with beautiful designs.
