Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Lying in the south of China, bordering Vietnam, Guangxi is one of the places in China with a richer ethnic variety. Home of 12 officially recognized minorities; it is the home also, of several branches of these nationalities and many small population ethnic groups, not recognized as minorities. With an area of 236,700 sq km and a population of near 50 millions, Guangxi is one of the poorest regions of China. Most of its soils are sharp mountains not suitable for agriculture. In the last decades the tourism business has brought some income to the areas around Guilin. An autonomous region of the Zhuang people, they constitute their main minority population, with more than 15 million people. The Yao, densely concentrated in some mountain districts, with several branches living in Guangxi, are also very important. In Guangxi are living also an important number of Miao and Dong, especially in the Northwest, and smaller populations of Shui, Mulao, Yi. The region capital is Nanning, in the south. Guangxi is divided into 14 prefecture-level cities: Nanning, the capital. With the main political and cultural administrative entities related to Guangxi nationalities: The Nationalities Museum, Guangxi Nationalities Press and governmental bodies. Liuzhou,
in the northwest, has two autonomous counties, inhabited mainly by Dong
and Miao peoples. Guilin,
in the north, has two autonomous counties: Baise, with Longlin Various Nationalities Autonomous County. Hezhou, with Fuchuan Yao Autonomous County. Hechi, with
five autonomous counties: Laibin, with Jinxiu Yao Autonomous County. And some cities with Han population as: Beihai |
