Wenchuan County

Wenchuan County lies in the southeaster corner of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Locally known as "The Gate to Aba", is an intermediate land between the plains around Chengdu and the mountain regions of Aba. Wenchuan county was famous as the home of the Wolong Nature Reserve, the main center of breed and research of the giant panda.

With an extension of 4,084 square kilometers and a population of 106,238 (2000 census), it has under its administrative level the county capital and 17 townships (3 zhen and 14 xiang in Chinese)

On May 12th, 2008 Wenchuan County was the epicenter of a great earthquake that leave thousands of dead only in the county, and a big wave of destruction as never before experienced by its population.

According to the ethnic distribution that showed the census of 1990, there were 27,154 Qiang (28,27% of the total population), living mainly in the north of the district; 13,837 Tibetans (14,4%), living in the west of Min River and 53,978 Han Chinese (56,2%), living mainly in the county capital and the lower lands.

Most of the Qiang people are distributed in six ethnic townships (1):

- Longxi Qiang Nationality Township, where a 99,6% of the population (4,248 of a total of 4,272) belonged to the Qiang nationality when the township was established in 1984.

- Keku Qiang Nationality Township, where a 97% of the population (3,027 of a total of 3,118) belonged to the Qiang nationality when the township was established in 1984.

- Yanmen Qiang Nationality Township, where a 92,6% of the population (4,188 of a total of 4,741) belonged to the Qiang nationality when the township was established in 1984.

- Weizhou Qiang Nationality Township, where a 71% of the population (5,423 of a total of 7,595) belonged to the Qiang nationality when the township was established in 1984.

- Yulong Qiang Nationality Township, where a 64,5% of the population (1,461 of a total of 2,265) belonged to the Qiang nationality when the township was established in 1984.

- Mianti Qiang Nationality Township, where a 47% of the population (2,229 of a total of 4,738) belonged to the Qiang nationality when the township was established in 1984.
