7th and the 8th centuries, the Uighur grew to be a powerful nation. According
to Chinese sources, among the Uighur proper, there were nine clans with
nine surnames bound by blood-relations. They were thus usually called
in Turkic “Toquz Oãuz”, meaning “the nine-tribe
grouping.”
