Yi lacquerware for sale in Beijing

One of the most interesting handicrafts of the Nosu branch of the Yi Nationality, are now for sale in Beijing. Starting in 2007 one of the shops in the Antique and Curio market of Panjiayuan has a nice exhibition of fine Nosu handicrafts (1).

The coloured lacquer ware of the Nosu people is their most characteristic work of art. Its origin is lost in their traditions, but some scholars suggest has been used by the Nosu people to make their daily household utensils for at least some centuries. It has a well defined pattern of fabrication that must follow several traditional steps.
